Ask Nadler 2 Impeach

Attention New York area Citizens: This meeting is important! Think Nadler is really coming? Did a politician actually listen to their constituency? I'll believe it on March 9th. Even so, I went to the first Town Hall Meeting on this subject, at the Ethical Culture building, and Elizabeth Holtzman is not to be missed. Bruce Fein & Scott Horton ain't no slackers neither.

We Demand Impeachment

Our congressman, Jerrold Nadler has usually been supportive of progressive, human rights causes and advocated research into illnesses caused by the toxic air after 9/11. You might think he'd be at the forefront of holding the Bush administration accountable for the crimes perpetuated in America, Afghanistan, Iraq and the world, but read David Swanson's report:

[...] Wednesday's meeting was handicapped, of course, because no-one says aloud what the reasons are for opposing impeachment. That Cheney and Bush have committed impeachable offenses is universally understood. But the arguments against impeaching them (other priorities,
bipartisanship, we don't have the votes, etc.) usually sound like lame cover for whatever the real reason is. I suspect the real reason is built into Nadler's plan of wasting a year in order to pass bills next year. He assumes that in 2009 there will be either a better Congress or a better president (he backs Hillary Clinton), or both.
Sadly, history says otherwise. For 230 years, the party that brings impeachment wins, and the party that fails to do so when it's called for loses. Conyers was there when the Democrats moved to impeach Nixon and then won big. He was there when they refused to impeach Reagan and then lost. And most of the current committee was there when the Republicans impeached Clinton against the will of the public for a non-impeachable offense and still won both houses of Congress and the White House.
[...] [Robert] Wexler proposed opening impeachment hearings on Cheney. Conyers committee staffer Perry Appelbaum laid out instead a schedule for non-impeachment hearings over the coming 11 months. Conyers' notion is to hold non-impeachment hearings on "the imperial presidency" and run out the clock .[...]

Mayor Bloomberg Monday turned his back on a hero cop who died after working at Ground Zero but was denied a place on the memorial honor roll because he didn't arrive at The Pile until two days after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Bloomberg also flatly rejected a renewed call for a special panel to set scientific and legal standards for reviewing the deaths of 9/11 workers like Officer James Godbee.
[…] the city's medical examiner, Dr. Charles Hirsch, told Godbee's widow her husband's death would remain classified as from "natural" causes because he was not at the site on the day of the terror attacks.

[…] The former Marine got to Ground Zero two days later and spent hundreds of hours working in the toxic stew. A physical fitness buff, Godbee was felled by a heart attack in December 2004. He was 44 years old.
[…] "The medical examiner was asked to rule on whether or not the legal definition of death is homicide," he said. "This is strictly the legal definition based on what the law is, and the medical examiner made a finding. They did not look at what the actual cause of death was."
That legalistic approach dismayed Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Carolyn Maloney, both Manhattan Democrats, and Vito Fossella, a Republican from Staten Island.
"It seems clear that an otherwise healthy man who worked for countless hours on The Pile at Ground Zero and who later developed sarcoidosis and died should have his case heard by the city's medical examiner," they wrote.
"At the very least, there should not be an arbitrary 'cutoff' for who can be considered a victim of 9/11. U.S. leaders apologize to Arar

Tim Harper WASHINGTON–Republicans joined with Democrats yesterday to offer Maher Arar something he has never received from the Bush administration – an apology for the U.S. role in wrongly detaining him, then sending him to Syria where he was tortured.
The 37-year-old wireless technology consultant listened by video link from Canada as an American legislator provided the most damning, blanket condemnation of the government's so-called security dossier, which it maintains contains evidence that Arar still poses a threat to the U.S.
"There is nothing there," said New York Democrat Jerrold Nadler.
… The administration even denied him entry to tell his story in person, said a clearly agitated Nadler.
He said he could not recall having to go to such lengths to get a witness to appear before a committee, and said he looked forward to personally apologizing to Arar on American soil.
… The surprise was the reaction of California Republican Dana Rohrabacher, a conservative who defended the rendition program, but also offered heartfelt apologies to Arar and said that he should be compensated.
…[Delahunt said] "We've seen enough dossiers from this administration – dossiers on weapons of mass destruction and the link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11."
