FREEZE on July 10th

Please forward widely.

Dear Friends,
Responding to the renewed threats of a U.S./Israeli attack on Iran before President Bush leaves office, United for Peace and Justice calls for actions to speak out against any U.S./Israeli military attack on Iran.
U.S. officials say Israel is mounting a "full court press" to get the Bush administration to strike Iran's nuclear complex, CBS News reports. In The New Yorker, Seymour Hersh reports that congressional leaders agreed last year to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran. New York Newsday and the Seattle-Post Intelligencer warn that Congress is considering a resolution promoted by AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) that would effectively endorse a naval blockade of Iran, an act of war.
Join NYC-UFPJ and other NYC groups on Thursday for a FREEZE in Grand Central Station. This dramatic action was used on the 5th anniversary of the war in Union Station in Washington, DC and drew a great deal of attention. At 5:00 PM, we will gather at Lexington and 42nd Street. At 5:30, we will enter Grand Central, spread out walking and talking casually and then at the appointed time, everyone will freeze and stand still and silent for 5 minutes. If you have "Peace with Iran" or "We Not Be Silent" t-shirts, we encourage you to wear them and we will have some for sale that day. We will also have Peace with Iran signs that can be pinned to your shirts. (No signs are allowed in Grand Central). To particpate, we ask that you register so that we know how many people to expect.

In addition to this action, we encourage all to take part in the National Days of Coordinated Action against war with Iran on July 19-21 that is being called for by United for Peace and Justice. Voices in the U.S. calling for real diplomacy and negotiations with Iran are being silenced and we help to bring them to light. Few people in this country know Iran has an offer on the table for comprehensive negotiations with the United States that could resolve the nuclear stand-off and other issues. Nor do they know that talks with Iran without preconditions are supported by independent experts like Thomas Pickering, the U.S. Ambassador to the UN during the first Bush administration.
To counter the renewed threats of military action, UFPJ is calling for actions around the country

STOP WAR on IRAN !
An Attack could be Imminent
We Can’t Afford to Wait
Take It to the Streets This Summer
U.S. out of Iraq
Money for human needs, not war!
It is with grave concern that we observe the growing threat of a new U.S. war--this time against the people of Iran.
The media is filled with reports of an alleged nuclear threat posed by Iran and the assumed need for the U.S. to take military action. These reports remind us of the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" reports issued in the months leading up to the war on Iraq.

Demos in NYC and across the country to
STOP WAR ON IRAN!

500 Anti-War Activists Arrested in Brussels!

Just as Tibetans around the world (especially those IN Tibet), gain courage from knowing they are supported, we in the US anti-war community can look overseas and know, as another anti-war group so wisely said: the world won’t wait!
Belgian police arrest 500 at NATO headquarters
dpa - International News Service in English, Mar 22, 2008 14:35 EST
Brussels (dpa) - Belgian police arrested nearly 500 demonstrators Saturday at NATO headquarters in Brussels as peace activists from 17 countries had tried to enter the grounds.
A Belgian peace initiative had called the protest under the motto "NATO game over" to prompt a debate on the alliance's role in the world.
Organizers and police put the total number of demonstrators at around 1,000.
"NATO is a relict of the Cold War," said Hans Lammerant of the Belgian peace organization Vredesactie which has called for a reduction of military intervention forces in the run-up to the NATO summit in Bucharest.
"A fundamental reform of NATO is on the agenda there. They want to present a new, strategic concept on the 60th anniversary of NATO in 2009," he said, adding military expenditure should be lowered.
Huge numbers of police took up positions around NATO's headquarters early Saturday.
Police had been monitoring the situation from a helicopter and also used a water cannon to disperse demonstrators.
The peace activists had armed themselves with rugs in order to climb over the barbed wire fence uninjured.
Those arrested were later released far from NATO's headquarters.
Italy's RAI Telegiornale reported that some were injured because they fell on barbed wire.

Stop-Loss Congress in March!

This March will mark the beginning of the 6th year of the war and occupation of Iraq. I hope that you will join me on Capitol Hill for an action which will focus on the role which Congress has played in the continuation of the war.
On Monday, March 10th and Tuesday March 11th Iraq Veterans in uniform, Veterans for Peace, Students on Spring Break and citizens of conscience will be on Capitol Hill to deliver STOP-LOSS orders to Congress.

Just as Congress has condoned the involuntary extensions of the tours of duty (called stop-loss) to military personnel, resulting in physical and mental stress for soldiers and hardship to their families and the continuation of suffering, death and destruction in Iraq, WE THE PEOPLE, for whom Congress works, will notify them that their upcoming Spring Recess has been canceled. Congress will be ordered to stay at their posts (offices) until they perform the job we elected them to do, which is BRING OUR TROOPS HOME AND END THE WAR AND OCCUPATION NOW!!

On Wednesday, If Congress does not comply, we will confront them with peaceful, civil resistance. CONGRESS CANNOT GO HOME UNTIL THE TROOPS COME HOME! If Congress members attempt to leave Capitol Hill the CODE PINK POLICE will issue citizen citations, but others will form blockades.

However, if Congress members do manage to slither out of DC and make their way back to their districts the following week, we ask that you organize SIT-INS in their offices and DEMAND that they watch the footage of the WINTER SOLDIER testimony!

If you cannot make it to DC please visit the web site and sign the STOP-LOSS CONGRESS petition NOW in support of this action. www.stop-losscongress.org

Peace NOW!

March 19--Into the Streets

No excuses! We the people have the power to stop this war machine, but only if we put our feet in the street in great numbers and with determination to keep the pressure up until we get what we want: justice AND peace! The fifth anniversary (5 years!!!) of the USA's invasion of Iraq will be an awesome demonstration of people power--if you make it so. Like Thom Hartman says at the end of his radio shows: Democracy begins with you. Tag, you're it!

Actions Against Bush Today

Today the chief thief of our government crawled out of his bunker in DC to address the UN. New Yorkers and citizens from other states participated in creative actions to let the world know that we do no support George Bush or his policies.

Back pain kept me from participating, but I hope anyone who desires to share their experiences today with the readers of danceawayblues will start typing away! Pictures are also welcome. Just click on the "commenti" link under the post.
